Cross-Cultural Course "LIVING AND WORKING IN SPAIN"

This course can be used as:

  • a self-assessment program that potential expatriates can take to decide if moving to Spain will work for them and their families
  • a full cross-cultural course that offers expats and business leaders information they need to understand in order to succeed in Spain

Being integrated into the Spanish culture goes beyond appreciating eating a ham with a hoof or becoming more religious about football than about your own religion!  Since Spain, probably more than any other European country, is going through a very far-reaching period of structural and organisational change, it is time to discover it in-depth if:

  • your company is working with a satellite office in Spain
  • you are planning to settle or retire there
  • you travel to Spain on business
  • your service organization is marketing across borders and targeting Spain

For employees and business travellers from diverse backgrounds and cultures, it is vital to develop greater sensitivity in the meaning of values as determinant factors in international business. Since culture is behind whatever is said or done, learning to work with universal and cultural specific matters is now fundamental.

My name is Edith Finkbeiner Mulligan and after residing in various countries, I came to live in Spain two decades ago. By then I felt I had grown out of “culture shock”, after all I had lived in another Spanish-speaking country and was also fluent in the language. In spite of originating from a similar culture, culture fatigue hit again. As preparation is key, a cultural training conveniently available anytime, anywhere would have been instrumental in:

  • providing in advance insider knowledge about Spanish social and business protocol
  • paving the way for the whole family for a smoother transition period
  • creating long-term cultural synergy towards working with Spanish counterparts

Even retirees returning to their native land after an abortive attempt at retirement in Spain admit they had failed to consider the cultural aspect and to conduct thorough research in advance of moving abroad.

So when Margarita Gokun Silver crossed my path, her training project seemed to fit my background like a glove after my many years dealing with expatriates in the relocation industry and later as intercultural trainer and coach.  Living and Working in Spain as an online alternative blended with a coaching approach seemed spot-on to accelerate the adjustment process, maximize the Spanish cultural experience professionally and for expatriate families to thrive from day one.

WE OFTEN GET ASKED: why would I buy this course if I can find information on the internet for free?

Two reasons:

I. If you simply want to learn about the do's and don'ts of the country, you can, in fact, buy a book or search through a variety of internet resources.  However, if you want to know how to successfully interact with people; if you want to learn what motivates them; if you want to learn how to manage them effectively; if you want to learn how to communicate and how not to communicate -- you need to know their prevalent cultural blueprint...AND you need to know your own cultural blueprint.

Both will become clear to you as you test yourself through our course's 11 cultural variables and then compare your score with that of the country you are going to.  This is the kind of information that's not available on the internet.

II. Once you know your cultural blueprint and their cultural blueprint -- and once you compare the two -- you will discover gaps.  Our course teaches you how to negotiate those gaps with the use of Culture Mastery Process that's based on:

  • the co-active coaching model
  • the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) tools
  • the systems and relationship approach

You won't find that on the internet either.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

This “LIVING AND WORKING IN SPAIN” course consists of eight (8) chapters of information, a video file, and two audio podcasts:

  • Audio 1 and Chapter 1:  Managing Culture Shock

A unique approach to handling culture shock in any situation.  Three handy tools to carry with you whenever you move and go through another transition.

  • Chapter 2 (Video): Spanish Culture

A video-presentation featuring photos from all over Spain, accompanied by a recording that will tell you about Spanish Culture.

  • Chapter 3: Spanish proverbs

Country’s proverbs can tell a lot about the country.  This chapter contains proverbs that will help you understand Spain.

  • Chapter 4: Spanish Corporate Culture

Doing business in Spain?  Managing staff?  If you are going to work in Spain, you’d want to familiarize yourself with what to expect when doing business with the Spanish. The Spanish have their own and unique business style affecting decision-making, the way they conduct meetings and their working style.

  • Chapter 5: Culture Mastery -- Your Cultural Blueprint

Learn about your own cultural preferences.  How do you compare to the Spanish within the eleven (11) cultural variables?

  • Chapter 6: The Spanish Cultural Blueprint

Learn about the Spanish cultural variables.  How wide is the gap between you and them?

  • Chapter 7: Culture Mastery -- Adjusting Your Cultural Habits

Manage the gap you discovered in the previous chapter.  Enjoy the variety of coaching and training exercises to close the gap and, thus, become more effective when living in Spain.

  • Chapter 8: Culture Mastery -- Cultural Negotiation and Alliances

Excellent tools for those gaps that are not easy to close!

This is a wealth of information! And it’s available to you anytime, anywhere and for the fraction of the cost.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Cross-Cultural training is usually expensive — it can run anywhere between $500 and $2000 dollars — and that’s why most of the time your company would have to provide it.  Yet companies often decide to economize on this part of the expatriate experience and very few expats get the benefit of a real cross-cultural training.

Business travelers and companies doing business in Spain almost never get the benefit of a cross-cultural training.  Yet this training is essential to their success.

That's why we have created this online course and that's why we are making it affordable.  The training we are offering you on-line is available for $199.  This includes FREE short e-mail consultations with the course creators in the first 30 days after purchasing the course.
